Calvary Gospel Church began quite humbly in 1922 with a Sunday School held in the old school house formerly located at Thorold Road and Wilson Road in Welland. The Sunday School continued to grow and eventually became a congregation called “The Church of the Open Door”, holding their first regular service in 1934.

In that same year construction began on the first church building. In 1948 the name was changed to Calvary Gospel Church (CGC) and two years after that CGC joined the Associated Gospel Church of Canada.

The church continued to grow to the point where a new building was required, the current location at 735 South Pelham Road.
